UNIT PLAN OVERVIEW

The unit focuses on different types of literary composition and challenges students to analyze and respond in various forms of discourse. The unit will also have a secondary emphasis on African American literary works pre-civil rights act.

The MAIN GOAL of this unit is to have students analyze a time period while being able to express their thoughts and opinions through different modes of communication. The unit is broken into three lessons and for the finale, a classroom debate. Each lesson will entail a different perspective of African Americans life prior to the civil right act passing. Along with the historical reflection, the class will discuss the current state of topics and evaluate how things have changed. Students will also examine the form of communication chosen, it's impact, and what difference modern applications would make.

In this project students will be broken up into groups and challenged to create memes that connect significant terms, concepts, and ideas from different 1950s poems we've reviewed to a modern mode of literacy. The project is meant to help students engage in their reading, and use the information in creative way. The project also promotes communication through group work.

              Lesson Plan #1:
         Group meme Project

                        Lesson Plan #2:
                     Civil Rights Essay

This project is for individual students. It focuses on different sections of civil rights speeches that I choose. In the project students will be able to annonate and communicate with each other on the document I made available. Although this project is an individual project, one of the main goals is to spark conversation using a different platform. At the end of the project, students will be able to express what they thought about the speech. The project promotes critical thinking and analyzation, as well as gives a platform for the students opinion. The essay project also explores and highlights other modes of communication.

      Lesson Plan #3:
Group Event Project

This is a group project where students will create/recreate an event headline based on key figures we have recently studied. Students will connect past occurrences with modern modes of communication. The class will discuss the impact of modern advancements and compare it to past modes of communication. This project calls on students being engaged and being creative.
